Tangley returns from knee injury

Sports have always been a way of life for Fall Creek High School sophomore Jackson Tangley. A dedicated basketball and football player, Tangley has spent countless hours honing his craft on the court and the field. But in July 2024, an unexpected knee injury forced him to step away from competition and embark on a challenging journey of rehabilitation.

Tangley's injury wasn't the result of a single play or collision; it was identified during an initial doctor's visit for general knee pain. After consulting with Dr. Crowe, an X-ray and MRI revealed an osteochondritis dissecans lesion on the medial femoral condyle on his right knee. The findings led to surgery on July 22nd, 2024, where doctors performed an arthroscopy with retrograde drilling to stimulate blood flow and promote healing.

The recovery process was anything but easy for Tangley. Jackson spent the first six weeks post-surgery in a knee brace, restricted to only 50 percent weight-bearing with crutches. Physical therapy sessions focused on reducing swelling, regaining knee mobility, and rebuilding strength. At the 10-week mark, he could finally begin light athletic movements, including jogging, agility exercises, and even shooting jump shots again. By October, Tangley had progressed enough to work independently on his rehab, but an uptick in activity led to patellar tendon pain. He resumed therapy for a few weeks in November, ensuring he was fully ready for the start of basketball season. Despite a minor setback late in the season, Tangley remained committed to his recovery, allowing him to help lead Fall Creek into the playoffs.

Throughout his rehabilitation, Northwoods Therapy played a crucial role in Tangley's physical and emotional recovery. With the help of Brett Ladsten and the Northwoods team, he regained confidence in his knee, received a structured therapy plan, and found motivation through the unwavering support of those around him. "Northwoods personnel have led both my emotional and physical recovery," Tangley said. "They gave me confidence, courage, and a plan to recover safely and effectively."

The experience has taught Tangley valuable life lessons. "I've learned how to be resilient and tough when dealing with a big setback like this," Tangley said. Jackson has gained a new appreciation for resilience, the importance of recovery, and the impact of those who support athletes through adversity. His journey isn't just about returning to the game, but it's about emerging stronger, both mentally and physically.

Tangley has long aspired to play basketball at the collegiate level, and after overcoming this setback, he's more determined than ever to make that dream a reality. As he looks ahead, one memory stands out: Fall Creek's thrilling victory over Osseo-Fairchild to advance to the regional final in 2025. With his recovery behind him and a renewed appreciation for the game, Tangley is ready to create even more unforgettable moments on the court.
