Altoona's Stokke coming back strong from UCL tear

Bennett Stokke, a senior at Altoona High School and a talented baseball player, embodies the dedication and determination that define great athletes. His journey over the past year has been marked by challenges that tested his physical and mental strength. In April 2024, while pitching against Pewaukee during a tournament in Iowa, Stokke suffered a significant setback: a torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow. The injury was a pivotal moment, forcing him to confront adversity head-on.

The recovery process following a UCL tear is notoriously grueling, requiring a meticulous and gradual approach. Stokke began physical therapy in May 2024, starting with gentle soft tissue work to promote healing and mobility. Over time, his rehabilitation progressed to include strength-building exercises and advanced stabilization drills aimed at restoring his arm’s functionality.

A critical part of his recovery involved completing a comprehensive hitting program, along with the majority of a demanding throwing program designed to bring him back to peak form. By October 2024, Stokke had officially completed his rehabilitation under the guidance of Northwoods Therapy, though his journey is ongoing as he continues to work independently on his throwing program.

Reflecting on the support he received, Stokke expressed gratitude for the expertise and encouragement provided by his physical therapists. “The physical therapist team ensured my arm felt good throughout the process and were always there to answer my questions,” he shared. Their attention to detail and personalized care were vital to his recovery.

For Stokke, the injury and recovery process brought invaluable life lessons. “One thing I learned is to never take anything for granted because anything can happen at any time,” he said. He also highlighted the importance of maintaining a positive outlook, even in the face of significant challenges. These lessons, forged through months of perseverance, will undoubtedly guide him in both athletics and life.

Despite the challenges, Stokke cherishes his high school baseball memories. One moment that stands out was the 2023 sectional semifinal game against Ashland. “Beating Ashland in extra innings was such an intense and unforgettable game,” he recalled. Moments like these capture the spirit of high school sports and underscore the passion that fuels athletes like Stokke.

With his high school career coming to a close, Stokke is eager to embark on the next chapter. This fall, he will continue his baseball journey at Iowa Central, where he aims to build on his experiences and further develop his skills. His determination to excel, coupled with the lessons learned from overcoming adversity, positions him for success at the collegiate level. As he prepares for the next phase of his athletic and academic career, we wish him continued success both on and off the field.
