Rebecca Sturz is your Varsity Journal Rehab Player of the Month. The dual-sport athlete for the Fall Creek Crickets has competed in Basketball and Track since her freshman year.
Sturz, a sophomore, sustained a leg injury during her first year of High School. While initially hearing the news that her recovery could take anywhere from 9-12 months, she was determined to heal quickly. Just as she had gotten used to doing on the track, she looked to beat the mark set by the doctors.
The recovery process was challenging for Sturz at first. Being an athletic person, she says that not being able to run or put weight on her leg was devastating to her at times.
Slowly but surely, she stayed with the program set for her by Northwoods Therapy, doing the exercises and movements set out for her by her team of therapists. As school was in session, Sturz did as much as she could to recover whenever she had time. She credits the staff at Northwoods for being flexible, working with her before classes early in the morning, and giving her the guidance needed to make her way back from injury.
After what had the potential to be a yearlong injury, Rebecca Sturz was back to full strength within seven months. In fact, she was able to get cleared to play just several days before her freshman basketball season started.
Since rehabilitation, Sturz has hit the ground running, playing basketball with her Fall Creek squad and her AAU Midwest Magic team.
In addition to basketball, Sturz has been a speedster on the track, competing in several events for Fall Creek. One of her favorite sports memories came during her freshman season when she broke her school’s 20-year-old record in the 100-meter dash.
She also found success with her 800-meter team, as they set the school record, and continuously kept breaking their own record, en route to a State appearance. Racking up 2 gold medals, and one 4th place medal at the 2023 competition, Sturz was able to help her Fall Creek Girl’s Team win first place overall at State.
Fresh off her sophomore basketball season, heading into spring, Sturz will look forward to getting back to the track, and hopefully doing what has come naturally to her these last two years: breaking the mark and setting new records.
