Schlitz leading Abes into postseason

In a back-and-forth Big Rivers Conference golf meet on May 14, Eau Claire Memorial senior Will Schlitz once again found himself toward the top of the leaderboard. This time, he was tied for second place in the competitive field. While he may have tied for second here, he stands alone as the number-one individual golfer in the conference.

Schlitz has made a name for himself these past few years at Memorial. In his sophomore season, he began his impressive high school run, with a trip to state. Leading the Old Abes to the state championship for the first time since 1977 was Schlitz, who had only been competing on Varsity for the past two seasons.

With the competition being stiff in the 2022 WIAA Division I State Meet, Schlitz won it all and earned the gold for Memorial.

His play as a sophomore put him on the radar of many top college golf programs in the area, but it was St. Thomas who ultimately won the commitment of Schlitz. Having recently moved to Division I from Division III, the Tommies program now competes against some of the top schools in the area.

Schlitz has proved recently that he is up for the challenge though, as the senior finishes his 2024 regular season campaign as the #1-ranked individual golfer in the conference with a total of 54 points.

He and his team’s strong play throughout the season has Eau Claire Memorial atop the Big Rivers Conference leaderboard as well. Poised to win their fourth conference championship in a row, Schlitz and the Old Abes are rolling.

Schlitz will be making a run at his third state appearance in three years this postseason, while again trying to earn his second championship title. Having already shown what he is capable of this season, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him swing his way into another gold medal.
