Mustangs end 30-year BRC title drought

There’s a new champion in the world of Big Rivers Conference Boy’s Tennis. The Menomonie Mustangs claimed the conference title for the first time in over 30 years this past May 14, when they defeated rival Eau Claire Memorial in tournament play.

This is Menomonie’s first conference title since 1990, and the first time since 1996 that Eau Claire Memorial has not held this distinction.

The Mustangs won big in the Big Rivers Conference tournament, with several athletes making it to the final matches in their section.

Menomonie’s Isaac Johnson was one of the first to win of the day, claiming the victory in 1 singles. Andrew Busch followed suit, winning the title at 3 singles. Finally, it was Charlie Behrend and Micah Gunderson who won big in 2 doubles.

Eau Claire Memorial came up just short in this meet, scoring 26 to Menomonie’s 33 on the day. The competitive Division I Big Rivers Conference saw three teams score over 15 points on the year, as Hudson took third place behind Memorial and Menomonie.

Senior Isaac Johnson earned Conference MVP honors on the season, partly for his outstanding play for the Mustangs down the stretch.

In total, the Mustangs had more than half of their varsity lineup earn first team all-conference recognition. In addition to Johnson, Andrew Busch, Charlie Behrend, Micah Gunderson, Noah Reckin, and Brady Goodman all got the nod.

Postseason play will begin the week of May 20, with the final State Tournament commencing on June 7. These Mustangs will look to keep their momentum going as they head into the final few weeks of the season.
